Composer of the Month: Sergei Prokofiev
Born: March 1, 1810 in Zelazowa Wola, Poland Chopin grew up in a secure, supportive home with piano lessons and music constantly surrounding him. Although he loved his country of Poland, Chopin also loved to travel, and he used his visits to meet important, influential friends that appreciated his music. Chopin himself was a celebrated pianist yet he enjoyed playing more for the small parties in Paris rather than giving public recitals for large audiences.
A composer of the early Romantic period, Chopin used the large Classical forms such as polonaises, waltzes and mazurkas to display the unique qualities of the piano. Listen to his Polonaise Op. 40 No. 1 nicknames the "Military" or one of his challenging preludes below!

About Mrs. Hjelle Currently teaching general music at Lester Park Elementary and Homecroft Elementary, I have lived in Duluth for 9 years. I completed my Bachelors of Vocal Music Education from the University of Minnesota- Duluth and is attending the University of St. Thomas to pursue a Master of Arts in Music Education: Kodaly. As many of my students know, I love camping and being in the outdoors! I have been camping every year for as long as I can remember. Whether it was road trips across the country to various national parks growing up, or my annual canoe camping trip with my dad, I love to experience the silence and beauty of nature.
I love to travel, and have had many opportunities to do so. I have been to over 20 different countries. Among my favorite cities to visit were Ljubljana-Slovenia, Florence-Italy, and Athens-Greece.
